Expert Knowledge
Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the questions our specification team hear most often.
What is the difference between FD30, FD60, FD90 and FD120?
The number refers to the number of minutes of fire resistance the door has been tested to provide — 30, 60 or 120 minutes. We manufacture FD30, FD60 and FD120 door sets, all independently tested to BS 476-22:1987 and EN 1634 under the UKAS-accredited Bluesky Certification scheme. The correct rating for your application is determined by your fire risk assessment, building regulations (specifically Approved Document B) and any specific guidance for your building type — for example, HTM 05-02 for NHS premises. We can advise on the appropriate specification during a site survey.
Do I need a certified installer to fit a fire door?
Yes. A fire door's certification is only valid if it is installed exactly as tested — correct frame, correct hardware, correct ironmongery, correct gaps. The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and associated guidance makes clear that fire doors must be installed by competent persons. Using an uncertified installer invalidates the door's fire performance and creates significant liability. All our installation teams hold BM TRADA Q-Mark Installation certification and are trained to current BS 8214 standards.
How often should fire doors be inspected?
For high-rise residential buildings (18m+ or 7+ storeys), the Building Safety Act 2022 requires quarterly checks of communal fire doors and annual checks of flat entrance doors. For other buildings, the Fire Safety Order requires regular inspection as part of the fire risk assessment — typically annually, or more frequently in high-traffic environments. Our compliance inspection programmes are designed to meet all these requirements.
What makes a fire door non-compliant?
Common compliance failures include: gaps between door and frame exceeding 3–4mm, damaged or missing intumescent seals, inoperable self-closing device, damaged glazing or glazing seal, incorrect or uncertified ironmongery, and physical damage to the leaf or frame. A door that has been painted over its seals, had its hardware changed, or been modified in any way may also have had its certification invalidated.
Can fire doors be painted or modified after installation?
Fire doors can be repainted provided the paint is applied correctly — specifically, intumescent seals must not be painted over, as this prevents them expanding in a fire. Modification of the door leaf (cutting holes, changing hardware, altering the frame) can invalidate certification unless the modification is covered by the original test evidence or a supplementary test. Any modification should be checked against the manufacturer's test evidence before proceeding.
What ironmongery is required on a certified fire door?
Every fire door set requires, as a minimum: certified hinges (typically Grade 13, EN 1935), a self-closing device (EN 1154 certified closer), intumescent and smoke seals around the perimeter, and a latch or lock to hold the door closed. The specific ironmongery must be the same as, or equivalent to, the hardware used in the original fire test — mixing uncertified or different-specification hardware invalidates the door. We supply complete certified ironmongery schedules with every door set.
What documentation should I receive with a fire door?
You should receive: the fire door certificate or test evidence number (referencing the specific test report), a product data sheet confirming the specification, installation instructions from the manufacturer, and ironmongery schedules listing every item of certified hardware. We supply a complete documentation pack with every order, and retain copies for your records.
Are your doors suitable for listed buildings?
Yes. We manufacture bespoke fire door sets that can match historic timber profiles, period mouldings and non-standard dimensions — allowing fire performance to be achieved without compromising the character of a listed building. We work closely with conservation officers and have extensive experience specifying doors for Grade II and Grade I listed properties. Early engagement with us during the planning stage helps ensure a compliant solution is designed in from the outset.

Certified Ironmongery
Complete Door Sets — Including Hardware
Every fire door we supply includes a certified ironmongery schedule — hinges, closers, handles, intumescent seals and smoke strips — all selected and tested as part of the complete door system.
Mixing uncertified hardware into a fire door system invalidates its certification. We eliminate that risk by supplying everything together.
